House History

The house at Herengracht 247 was built in 1648.

The Herengracht was laid out from 1612 on the initiative of Mayor Frans Hendricksz Oetgens. Initially, it was a fortified canal (dug in 1585) behind the Singel. The canal ran within the city walls parallel to the canal outside the city walls. Herengracht still shows a bend at the Driekoningenstraat; at that point, the outer canal was constructed around a fortress. The canal was renamed Herengracht in 1612, in honor of the Lords Governors of the city of Amsterdam.

The plot of Herengracht 247 was built by Anthony Oetgens van Waveren in 1648. Anthony Oetgens van Waveren (1585-1658), Knight, Lord of Waveren, Botsbol, and Ruyge Wilnis, was a lieutenant of the militia and Mayor of Amsterdam. He was a son of Frans Hendricksz Oetgens and Alydt van Houff. (Frans was also Mayor of Amsterdam from 1626 to 1631, in 1638, and in 1649-1650.) Anthonie Oetgens van Waveren married Anna Spiegel in 1611. He bought land near ‘s-Graveland in 1634, where he built the estate Spiegelrust, named after his wife. He was also chosen as a member of Parliament (in 1637 and 1655) and the Council of the Amsterdam Admiralty (in 1652). In 1652 and 1653, he represented the Dutch Republic at the court of Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway. In 1653, he mediated between Sweden and Poland and contributed to the peace treaty between Queen Christina of Sweden and King John II Casimir of Poland.
